On May 16, we had a full day of activities. First, we walked around with a local tour guide and visited some historically significant places all around Berlin, such as the Jewish Memorial, the Brandenburg Gate, various government buildings and the site where Adolf Hitler committed suicide. In the afternoon, we went to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, where we saw first hand the conditions in which the people were detained. We learned what their day to day lives were like between forced labor and the murderous actions carried out against them. We then went out for a German feast, celebrating our last night in Germany. The students did not care much for the food though (pass the hot sauce lol).

On May 19, we packed up our things and headed towards the airport. We stopped along the way at the Miedzyrecki Region Fortified (MRU) Zone, which is a series of defensive bunkers and mazes underground. There are over 100 concrete defense structures spread out over many miles, all interconnected by underground passageways. After that we headed back towards Berlin, to catch our evening flight back to New York.

On May 18, we had a full day in the city of Wroclaw, Poland. We walked around the old town and took so many pictures of the beautiful squares and plazas and statues. We had a traditional polish lunch, which the kids really liked. We then went to The Games and Computers Museum of the Past Era, where the kids were able to play games that existed in the 1970s through 1990s as well as some older computer systems. We returned to Poznan for our final dinner, and celebrated at a local Japanese restaurant, selected by one of our students who was celebrating their birthday.

On May 17, we headed out on a 3 hour drive to Poznan, Poland. We met a tour guide upon arrival and spent the afternoon walking around the historic city of Poznan. We went to the top of a lookout point for an amazing panorama of the old town. We also went to a class that taught us to make the famous St. Martin Polish Croissant, which differs from the more famous French croissant. Some of the students volunteered to help prepare them in front of the class. After that, we had a great dinner and headed back to the hostel for the evening.

Every year, a small group of GA students get an opportunity to travel abroad. This year, the destinations were to Germany and Poland!
On Sunday May 14, 2023, a group of students from GA along with 2 students from Clarke Academy flew to Berlin, Germany. We arrived the next day at 2:00pm, May 15, 2023 and after dropping off our stuff in the hostel, went out to eat lunch and then walk around Berlin. We went to see pieces of the Berlin Wall that are still intact and took pictures in front of them and went to the East Side Gallery Museum, which has numerous exhibits about the division in Germany at the time and how the life in Berlin used to be.
