Dear GA Community,

Welcome back, students, staff, families, and community members! The 2011-2012 school year is well underway. It gives us great pleasure to inform you about the new and continuing programs we are offering at Greenburgh Academy this year. Last school year, we put together a team of faculty members to learn about PBIS, Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports. This program is designed to identify, adapt, and sustain school-wide disciplinary practices. Our staff has been excited to implement this program, because it recognizes and reinforces the positive behavior exhibited by our students, while redirecting the more challenging behaviors noted at our school. As this program is implemented this school year, students and families will be informed of the new procedures and rewards bestowed upon our students.

As always, our athletics program is going strong, with students participating on the volleyball and football teams, the latter in conjunction with Leake & Watts. Our boys & girls are also getting geared up for basketball season, and our coaches will be conducting strength training sessions in the pre-season. Additionally, GA’s famous ski club will be hitting the slopes as soon as the first snow appears. The juniors & seniors have been participating in post-secondary planning, which have involved a variety of guest speakers, covering such topics as careers, college options, and vocational programming. Students will also be attending college tours to Pace University, Westchester Community College, Lehman College, Bronx Community College, and the Fashion Institute of Technology, among others. Additionally, students will be attending the National Hispanic College Fair to explore the various options available to them.

This year we are focused on our district-wide goals, but would also like to continue with increasing our parental involvement. A Parent Teacher Association is being established to bridge the gap between school and home, keep the parents informed about school activities, and have input into the school. Please contact either Mr. Marino or Ms. Spoor at 914-231-9656 if you would like to be involved. Last but not least, we would like to thank our faculty members and students for adjusting so well during our transition to the Valhalla and Irvington sites. We are all enjoying the serenity of being on suburban campus settings. The administration has put together a committee of faculty members to search for a permanent home for Greenburgh Academy, and we anticipate our final move to occur in 2012. Thank you for being part of our GA community, and we look forward to a prosperous school year!

Sincerely,

Veronica P. Howell, Principal
David R. Gualtiere, Assistant Principal
